HSTP systems

Home Sewage Treatment Plant (HSTP) is an environmentally friendly way of treating water. These types of systems encourage bacteria growth to treat the water without adding any chemicals. The HSTP handles both black water coming from toilets and greywater from the kitchen, showers or washing machines.

Home Sewage Treatment Plant Maintenance

The home sewage treatment plant (HSTP) requires maintenance and management for its proper functioning.  W.A.S. Wastewater Solutions ensure that all wastewater is effectively moved from the home to the HSTP and then distributed to the absorption trench where it is reabsorbed into the surrounding ground.

Routine checks of each component of the system is required to ensure that all parts of the treatment plant are operating correctly.

Stages of Home Sewage Treatment Plant

Sewage treatment generally involves three main stages – the primary, secondary and tertiary treatment stages.

The Primary treatment chamber, also known as the septic tank chamber or the trash trap, is where the treatment process is started.  All of the grey and black water from the home flows into a chamber called the primary sedimentation tank and holds waste until it has had enough time for heavy sediment to disperse to the bottom.

The Secondary treatment chamber, also known as the aeration chamber, is where air passes through liquid and gaseous oxygen transfers into the water, becoming dissolved oxygen, thus creating favorable conditions for bacterial that will treat the water.

The Tertiary treatment chamber, in this chamber the water is cleaner and lighter than before, as pollutants settle on the bottom of this chamber, then chlorine or UV light will be introduced to remove any unwanted bacteria from the water.  Wastewater will be leaving the the HSTP after this process and will be reintroduced back into the environment.

Do home sewage treatment plants still need emptying?

Yes, just like with a septic tank, the sludge still needs to be emptied by tanker.  This is because the HSTP’s primary function is only to purify the water. Our technicians assess the sludge levels during each service and will advise when a pump out is required.

What are Council Requirements for HSTP's?

All councils require a quarterly service on most HSTP’s. W.A.S can let you know the steps to take to ensure your system is council compliant.  W.A.S. Wastewater Solutions submit service reports to council as part of your service agreement.

What should you NOT dispose of with a HSTP?

DO NOT put milk, cream, fruit juice, and soft drink, cordial, wine or ESPECIALLY BEER, hair dyes peroxide down any sink or drainhole.
DO NOT rinse rice or drain rice water down the sink.
DO NOT use any disinfectants or other bactericides or products containing Anti-Bacterial qualities, e.g. Baby wipes.
